Are there ANY decent dating sites these days?

It's been a few years since I've been on any dating sites. I used to get plenty of responses from POF, OK Cupid, and even match.

I'll get some responses on match but not anywhere close to the # of responses I used to get (despite them raising their prices).

OK Cupid and POF were once free and now want money. Even if I pay, getting responses is like pulling teeth. Any responses I did get were from people way below my standards (hate to say it that way but it's the truth).

Tinder? Forget about it. I did many swipes and not one response.

My appearance hasn't changed in the past few years and I've used a similar profile. It seems that Match bought every dating site and has RUINED them while fixing their algorithms to keep compatible people away from each other. Is online dating a total waste at this point?

In same-sex matches, either person has 24 hours to make the first move, while the other individual has 24 hours to respond. So, don't let them be the one that got away. Send that message ASAP.

Key findings about online dating in the U.S.

Online dating in the United States has evolved over the past several decades into a booming industry, transforming the way some people meet matches. A new report from Pew Research Center explores the upsides and downsides of online dating by highlighting Americans’ experiences and views about it. Here are 12 key takeaways.

How we did this

Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americans’ experiences with dating sites and apps and their views of online dating generally. This analysis is based on a survey conducted among 6,034 U.S. adults from July 5-17, 2025. This included 4,996 respondents from the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. It also included an oversample of 1,038 respondents from Ipsos’ KnowledgePanel who indicated that they are lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB), with oversampled groups weighted back to reflect proportions in the population. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology.

Here are the questions used for this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology.

Terminology

A note about the Asian adult sample

This survey includes a total sample size of 234 Asian adults. The sample primarily includes English-speaking Asian adults and therefore may not be representative of the overall Asian adult population. Despite this limitation, it is important to report the views of Asian adults on the topics in this study. As always, Asian adults’ responses are incorporated into the general population figures throughout this report. Asian adults are shown as a separate group when the question was asked of the full sample. Because of the relatively small sample size and a reduction in precision due to weighting, results are not shown separately for Asian adults for questions that were only asked of online dating users or other filtered questions. We are also not able to analyze Asian adults by demographic categories, such as gender, age or education.

Three-in-ten U.S. adults say they have ever used a dating site or app, identical to the share who said this in 2025. That includes 9% who report doing so in the past year, according to the Center’s survey of 6,034 adults conducted July 5-17, 2025.

Online dating is more common among younger adults than among older people. About half of those under 30 (53%) report having ever used a dating site or app, compared with 37% of those ages 30 to 49, 20% of those 50 to 64 and 13% of those 65 and older.

When looking at sexual orientation, lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) adults are more likely than their straight counterparts to say they have ever used a dating site or app (51% vs. 28%).

Men are somewhat more likely than women to have tried online dating (34% vs. 27%), as are those with at least some college education when compared with those with a high school education or less.

Adults who have never been married are much more likely than married adults to report having used online dating sites or apps (52% vs. 16%). Adults who are currently living with a partner (46%) or who are divorced, separated or widowed (36%) are also more likely to have tried online dating than married adults.

There are no statistically significant differences in the shares of adults who report ever using an online dating platform by race or ethnicity: Similar shares of White, Black, Hispanic and Asian adults report ever having done so.

Tinder tops the list of dating sites or apps the survey studied and is particularly popular among adults under 30. Some 46% of online dating users say they have ever used Tinder, followed by about three-in-ten who have used Match (31%) or Bumble (28%). OkCupid, eharmony and Hinge are each used by about a fifth of online dating users. Grindr and HER are used by very few online dating users overall (6% and 3%, respectively) but are more widely used by LGB adults than straight adults. Additionally, 31% of online dating users mention having tried some other online dating platform not asked about directly in this survey. (Read the topline for a list of the most common other dating sites and apps users mentioned.)

Tinder use is far more common among younger adults than among older Americans: 79% of online dating users under 30 say they have used the platform, compared with 44% of users ages 30 to 49, 17% of users 50 to 64 and just 1% of those 65 and older. Tinder is the top online dating platform among users under 50. By contrast, users 50 and older are about five times more likely to use Match than Tinder (50% vs. 11%).

One-in-ten partnered adults – meaning those who are married, living with a partner or in a committed romantic relationship – met their current significant other through a dating site or app. Partnered adults who are under 30 or who are LGB stand out from other groups when looking at this measure of online dating “success”: One-in-five partnered adults under 30 say they met their current spouse or partner on a dating site or app, as do about a quarter of partnered LGB adults (24%).

Online dating users are somewhat divided over whether their experiences on these platforms have been positive or negative. Among those who have ever used a dating site or app, slightly more say their personal experiences have been very or somewhat positive than say they have been very or somewhat negative (53% vs. 46%).

Some demographic groups are more likely to report positive experiences. For example, 57% of men who have dated online say their experiences have been positive, while women users are roughly split down the middle (48% positive, 51% negative). In addition, LGB users of these platforms are more likely than straight users to report positive experiences (61% vs. 53%).

Roughly a third of online dating users (35%) say they have ever paid to use one of these platforms – including for extra features – but this varies by income, age and gender. Some 45% of online dating users with upper incomes report having paid to use a dating site or app, compared with 36% of users with middle incomes and 28% of those with lower incomes. Similarly, 41% of users 30 and older say they have paid to use these platforms, compared with 22% of those under 30. Men who have dated online are more likely than women to report having paid for these sites and apps (41% vs. 29%).

Those who have ever paid to use dating sites or apps report more positive experiences than those who have never paid. Around six-in-ten paid users (58%) say their personal experiences with dating sites or apps have been positive; half of users who have never paid say this.

Women who have used online dating platforms in the past year are more likely to feel overwhelmed by the number of messages they get, while men are more likely to feel insecure about a lack of messages. Among current or recent online dating users, 54% of women say they have felt overwhelmed by the number of messages they received on dating sites or apps in the past year, while just a quarter of men say the same. By contrast, 64% of men say they have felt insecure because of the lack of messages they received, while four-in-ten women say the same.

Overall, 55% of adults who have used a dating app or site in the past year say they often or sometimes felt insecure about the number of messages they received, while 36% say they often or sometimes felt overwhelmed.

Among recent online daters, large majorities of men and women say they have often or sometimes felt excited by the people they have seen while using these platforms, though large majorities also say they have often or sometimes felt disappointed.

When asked why they’ve turned to dating sites or apps in the past year, 44% of users say a major reason was to meet a long-term partner and 40% say a major reason was to date casually. Smaller shares say a major reason was to have casual sex (24%) or make new friends (22%).

Men who have used a dating platform in the past year are much more likely than women to say casual sex was a major reason (31% vs. 13%). There are no statistically significant gender differences on the other three reasons asked about in the survey.

About four-in-ten U.S. adults overall (42%) say online dating has made the search for a long-term partner easier. Far fewer (22%) say it has made the search for a long-term partner or spouse harder. About a third (32%) say it has made no difference.

Adults under 30 are less convinced than their older counterparts that online dating has made the search for a partner easier. These younger adults are about evenly divided in their views, with 35% of those ages 18 to 29 saying it has made the search easier and 33% saying it has made the search harder.

When it comes to the choices people have on dating sites and apps, 43% of adults overall say people have the right amount of options for dating on these platforms, while 37% think choices are too plentiful. Fewer (13%) say there are not enough options.

Most U.S. adults are skeptical or unsure that dating algorithms can predict love. About one-in-five adults (21%) think that the types of computer programs that dating sites and apps use could determine whether two people will eventually fall in love. But greater shares of Americans either say these programs could not do this (35%) or are unsure (43%).

Americans are split on whether online dating is a safe way to meet people, and a majority support requiring background checks before someone can create a profile. The share of U.S. adults who say online dating is generally a very or somewhat safe way to meet people has dipped slightly since 2025, from 53% to 48%. Women are more likely than men to say online dating is not too or not at all safe.

There are also differences by age: 62% of Americans ages 65 and older say online dating is not safe, compared with 53% of those 50 to 64 and 42% of adults younger than 50. Those who have never used a dating site or app are particularly likely to think it is unsafe: 57% say this, compared with 32% of those who have used an online dating site or app.

At the same time, six-in-ten Americans say companies should require background checks before someone creates a dating profile, while 15% say they should not and 24% are not sure. Women are more likely than men to say these checks should be required, as are adults 50 and older compared with younger adults.

These checks do not have majority support among online dating users themselves, however: 47% of users say companies should require background checks, versus 65% of those who have never used a dating site or app.

Younger women who have used dating sites or apps stand out for experiencing unwanted behaviors on these platforms. A majority of women under 50 who have used dating sites or apps (56%) say they have been sent a sexually explicit message or image they didn’t ask for, and about four-in-ten have had someone continue to contact them after they said they were not interested (43%) or have been called an offensive name (37%). Roughly one-in-ten of this group (11%) have received threats of physical harm. Each of these experiences is less common among women online dating users ages 50 and older, as well as among men of any age.

Among all online dating users, 38% have ever received unsolicited sexually explicit messages or images while using a dating site or app; 30% have experienced continued unwanted contact; 24% have been called an offensive name; and 6% have been threatened with physical harm.

About half of those who have used dating sites and apps (52%) say they have come across someone they think was trying to scam them. Men under 50 are particularly likely to say they have had this experience: 63% of men in this age group who have used dating sites or apps think they have encountered a scammer on them. Smaller shares of men ages 50 and older (47%) and women of any age (44%) say the same.

Note: Here are the questions used for this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology.

Looking for love online: A guide to dating apps and sites

There are dozens and dozens of sites and apps out there to help you find the right match. So many, in fact, that there ought to be an app to help you find the right app.

We've boiled down the digital dating options into categories to try to make the search-before-the-search a little easier. The list isn't exhaustive, but we hope it will make the process a little less exhausting and help you find the one that's right for you.

For serious people, looking for serious relationships:

The old standbys are going strong. Match.com and eHarmony are still the go-to sites for those who are in it for the long haul. Memberships will cost you on the order of $20 to $60 a month, depending on the length of your subscription. Zoosk came a little later, but boasts 27 million users. It costs $30 per month (and some users complain .

Free, free, free:

The top free dating app is OkCupid. Many people swear by it, but even the company knows you get what you pay for. It's right there on the site: "We don't claim to evaluate you perfectly, but we do claim to find someone who claims to fulfill your claimed requirements, exactly." Plenty of Fish -- which claims to have 90 million users and be the largest dating site -- is also free, though a paid upgraded account earns perks like showing up more prominently and nixing ads.

Fast, fast, fast:

Tinder didn't invent the swipe-right-to-like, swipe-left-to-pass action it's famous for (credit goes to Grindr, the location-based app to let gay men find each other by proximity), but the free app certainly gets the nod for making it mainstream. And though it's knocked for being superficial because it only gives you a photo and minimal info to make a decision on, it's become increasingly legitimized and many (mostly young) people use it to find meaningful dates, not just a hook-up. Hinge also encourages snap judgements, but it tries to offer better matches in the first place. Though both require a Facebook login, Hinge is more selective in who it presents, only giving you friends of friends.

Narrowing the field:

Many sites and apps help narrow the search from the get-go. Only looking for someone who shares your faith? JDate ($30-$40 per month) and its free Tinder-like cousin JSwipe help connect Jews with other Jews, while Christian Mingle (about $14-$30 per month) is -- clearly -- where Christians mingle. There are a number of sites geared specifically to black singles, such as the aptly named Black Singles. For single parents, there's Single Parent Meet, and for people who want a partner who'll live without bread, there's Gluten Free Singles. High There is the Android app for pot smokers. San Francisco-based The League limits users to the upper echelon of education and job prospects; it currently has a waiting list of 75,000.

Keeping it simple:

Coffee Meets Bagel won't overload you with options. It pulls one daily potential match from your Facebook network and delivers it predictably at noon. You have until noon the next day to decide if you're interested. Hinge keeps the number of matches per day to around a dozen or fewer, while the League caps it at five.

App-improvement:

Some apps were founded to improve on what other apps are doing wrong. (Both Coffee Meets Bagel and Hinge, above, could fall into this category, too.) If you think most apps are focused too much on looks, consider Loveflutter, which shows you a tweet-length fact about a person before showing you his or her face, or Willow, which begins with a conversation starter. Score has a similar philosophy, but is set up more like a digital version of "The Dating Game" to get things going by giving you kooky questions to answer. Bumble only lets women initiate talks, in an effort to be "less creepy" than other apps. The Grade lets you grade other users on their bad behavior (or bad grammar in their profile).

Newly single? A beginner’s guide to the best dating apps

S wiping singles are big money – it is estimated that the dating market is worth $12bn (£9.3bn) globally. But how do we navigate the glut of options available to help us find love? With about 25 million people in the US alone thought to have regularly used dating apps this year, the sea is stocked with fish aplenty – so should we Bumble, Tinder, Happn or perhaps Grindr our way to success?

Tinder

Photograph: SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images What is it? The most popular and enduring of the first wave of dating apps, Tinder was founded in 2025 as a way to help US students meet each other; in other words, a social network for friendship as well as dating. By 2025, however, Tinder had moved far beyond the campus and was registering a billion swipes on the app every day (left for “no”, right for “yes”), with users spending an average of 90 minutes a day scanning through their geographically defined options. Despite having added “super-likes” and paid-for profile consultancy, the app has become known for one simple reason: hooking up. How do I use it? All you need to do is upload some (ideally well-lit) photos. Personal information can be as minimal as you want it to be, although men may want to be judicious in their use of dog pics: some users were accused of “dogfishing” – posing with furry friends in an effort to attract more dates – on the app. Who will I meet? Tinder is where you are most likely to find anyone and everyone in your local area: the person you see on the train platform each morning who you swear wears a wedding ring; the primary-school friend you lost touch with 15 years ago; your boss; or maybe your ex. Either person can make the first move to start a conversation on the app, so it is anyone’s game. Word of warning If you meet “the one”, merely removing the app from your phone won’t be enough to delete your profile – you will still be roaming the ether looking for love. You have to delete your profile as well as the app to be fully off-grid. Use it if you are looking for … a late-night rendezvous.

Bumble

Photograph: Jaap Arriens/Alamy What is it? Billed as the female-friendly version of Tinder, Bumble is very similar except for the fact that only women can start the conversation. When it comes to same-sex matches, either person can make the first move. How do I use it? Again, users swipe left or right depending on their preference and the requirements for signing up are minimal: images, your name and your age. Who will I meet? With more than 55 million users, Bumble has become many people’s first port of call in the digital dating world; Tinder’s open door and hookup-centric reputation puts off some new users. Word of warning Despite taking the lofty position of promising a platform for relationships rather than encounters, Bumble still exists for the same purpose, no matter what your matches may tell you. Watch out for the “softbois” here (alternative-minded emotional manipulators who draw you in with their promises of late-night chats about Lou Reed and Ocean Vuong then leave you high and dry). Use it if you are looking for … flirtatious texting.

Hinge

Photograph: Optura Design/Alamy What is it? Here is where things get a little strange. Hinge’s USP is limiting your pool of potential matches to friends of friends (as gleaned from your Facebook account) or friends of friends of friends, and so on. In theory, you or someone you know should be friends with your match. How do I use it? There is no swiping – instead, users have to answer an array of questions that are posted on their profile page, along with their (again ideally well-lit) images. Question prompts range from the basic (“Most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done” – for some reason, always a holiday) to the aspirational (“A life goal of mine”) and the bizarre (“You should not go out with me if …”). Who will I meet? Hinge’s tagline is “Designed to be deleted” and the tenor of the conversations on the app makes it feel more relationship-focused than others. It is also prime territory for stumbling upon previous matches from other apps who have matured to Hinge’s aesthetic. Word of warning Hinge founder Justin McLeod’s romance with his wife has been turned into an episode of Amazon’s Modern Love series, after the journalist Deborah Copaken’s column on him in the New York Times in 2025 went viral – but it could also be a Hinge cautionary tale. McLeod and his wife met in college, broke up and spent eight years apart before Copaken encouraged him to take action before it was too late. If they had used Hinge, they might never have found their way to each other again. Use it if you are looking for … the one (or are ready to settle for less).

Happn

Photograph: Happn What is it for? Things get even stranger here. Happn is designed for you to meet someone in your vicinity, ideally someone you have just brushed past on the street or made awkward eye contact with on the train (perhaps like Michael Fassbender’s opening scene in Shame). How do I use it? You need to be on the app all the time. Every time you see someone who catches your eye, you check the app to see if they are also on it. Then, rather than approach them on the street, you strike up a digital conversation, where you painstakingly recount your non-encounter in the hope that they will agree to a planned meet. Basically, a meet-cute for the socially anxious. Who will I meet? Anyone within a 1km radius, from colleagues to commuters and – God forbid – family members. Word of warning You are likely to bump into your matches again, so it may be harder to live down embarrassing first dates. Use it if you are looking for … convenience.

Raya

What is it? There are plenty of apps for those with a more rarefied taste – see EliteSingles, which caters for “professionals”; Luxy, which describes itself as a “millionaire dating app”; and Uniform Dating, for people whose jobs usually involve wearing a uniform (firefighters ready yourselves). But none has the cachet of Raya – the private members’ club of dating apps. How do I use it? You can join only after being nominated by an anonymous “global committee”, which means Raya has become known as the dating app for celebs. Who will I meet? While you may find Made in Chelsea or Hollyoaks cast members on Bumble, celebrities said to have been spotted on Raya in the past include Cara Delevingne, Teri Hatcher and Diplo. Word of warning “Journalist” probably isn’t on the list of Raya-friendly professions, so there is no way to verify these rumours – unless you are able to join yourself. Use it if you are looking for … a story to sell to a gossip magazine.

Lumen

What is it? Tinder, Bumble and Hinge are generally targeted at 18- to 35-year-olds. Lumen is the dating app designed for over-50s. The statistics suggests that this demographic needs such a service: the ONS expects 42% of marriages to end in divorce, while 12.9% of 50- to 64-year-olds in England and Wales were single as of 2025. Perhaps as a result of all of this, STI rates among over-50s doubled between 2025 and 2025. How do I use it? Founded in September 2025, Lumen reached 350,000 users in just six months with its canny reinterpretation of the swiping format. The interface is minimal but clunky – designed for the least tech-savvy Boomers – and has few market rivals. Who will I meet? Late bloomers, divorcees and basically any singleton over 50 with functioning knowledge of a smartphone. Word of warning Facebook Dating launched recently in the US. Since 72% of all online 50- to 64-year-olds use the social media site, Lumen could have a rival on its hands. Use it if you are looking for … a partner for a single parent, or love later in life.

Grindr

Photograph: Alamy What is it? The ultimate, utilitarian ideal of the dating app world. Grindr is marketed as a “social networking app for gay, bi, trans and queer people”. How do I use it? The app removes any frivolous pre-date agonising from the equation and has been serving all manner of location-based meetings since its launch in 2025. Who will I meet? From the curious to the adventurous, all are welcome. Word of warning The anti-Hinge, Grindr isn’t designed to be deleted, but rather to be a quiet fixture on your phone’s home screen, always on hand, no matter the time, place – or relationship status. Use it if you are looking for … anything and everything.

Guardian Soulmates

What is it? The Guardian’s dating app. Eighty per cent of users are Guardian readers, so your political opinions and environmental consciousness will probably be reciprocated. And it is free (to start). How do I use it? This is a website and an app, so you can use your desktop to register your profile, images and personal details, then message away with other singles in your area. If you pay for a subscription, you can see more photos of potential soulmates, plus find out about their hobbies. Who will I meet? The diverse range of single Guardian readers (and maybe even some journos). With Soulmates flaunting marriages on its home page, this app is one for those who are in it for the long haul. Word of warning Do soulmates exist? Use it if you are looking for … someone to gaze at over your morning copy of the Guardian, of course.

If you are newly single after being in a relationship for a long time, if you’ve been single with no luck for a long time, or if you are hovering anywhere in between, you might be wondering how to find the best dating app for you.

Online dating can feel daunting and you may feel that the odds are stacked against you, but a 2025 study found that nearly 39% of heterosexual couples in the United States reported meeting online, up from 22% in 2025.

Whether you’re new to the game or just trying to take a new approach, here’s how to find the best dating app for you.

At a Glance

Whether or not you're new to using dating apps, they can feel overwhelming or frustrating at times. Remind yourself that it's OK to go slowly. It's even beneficial to take a break from dating apps once in a while. However, used mindfully, dating apps can be a great way to learn more about what you desire in your dating experiences and relationships, as well as potentially meet other single people who share your values.

— At a Glance

Define Your Parameters

It’s important to go into any dating situation thinking about what you’re looking to get out of it, but particularly in online dating and dating on the apps where you are literally filtering out potential matches based on the preferences you select.

For example, if you are sober, would dating someone who had a few drinks a week be a deal-breaker for you, or vice versa? If you are religious, would a relationship with someone non-religious or outside of your religion be a non-starter for you?

Try Lots of Different Dating Apps

It can pay off to be on several dating apps. “Some people act like they’re buying a house when they’re signing on to a dating app, like it’s such a big commitment,” says Chloe Carmichael, PhD, a psychologist and author of "Dr. Chloe’s 10 Commandments of Dating."

Chloe Carmichael, PhD

Someone wouldn’t limit themselves to one singles bar so why one dating app?

— Chloe Carmichael, PhD

While you may be the type of person who makes decisions by creating spreadsheets, Carmichael says the best way to find out the best app for you is to just jump in and try them out. “It’s like trying on a dress—you need to actually experience it to see if it’s right for you.”

Carmichael views dating as an issue of supply and demand. You are in limited supply; you want to create demand for yourself to increase the likelihood that you meet someone. “The more we can create demand and options for ourselves, what’s to lose?”

Dating Apps to Try

Bumble: Women are in the driver's seat for this one—they are the ones to message first. For same-sex couples, either party can message first.

Tinder: One of the first to introduce the swipe-right format. Users like it for its simplicity, though it is sometimes synonymized with more casual, hook-up relationships.

Grindr: This app is for gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people to connect with each other, used predominantly by those who are male-identifying.

Her: Similarly, Her is an app for lesbian, trans, bi, and queer women.

Dig: If 'must love dogs' is one of your criteria, Dig is known as "the dog person's dating app" for the people who love dogs to find each other.

BLK App: This app is for Black singles interested in dating each other—especially since many Black women don't feel safe dating on other mainstream apps.

Hinge: This app is geared toward people interested in more serious relationships. It requires people who use the app to answer prompts about their interests, lifestyle, and relationship goals.

Feeld: This app is for couples and singles looking to explore alternative relationship structures such as ethical non-monogamy.

OkCupid: OkCupid is for people who are looking for romantic relationships, but also for those who want to meet friends or network with others.

Coffee Meets Bagel: This is a service that is geared toward people who are looking for love and serious relationships. Once you and another person "like" each other's profiles, you have eight days to message on the platform before conversations expire.

Should You Pay for a Dating App?

While there are many dating apps that you can access without ever paying a penny, there are also apps that either charge a full membership fee or that charge a la carte for different levels of access to features.

Your budget matters when considering how to find the best dating app for you. Here are some things you might want to consider when deciding if it is personally worth it for you to pay for a dating app.

In a la carte situations, where paying simply boosts your profile to be seen by more people, Carmichael thinks of this similarly to advertising—“it’s just another way to create demand,” she says.

But in a situation where, for example, a woman might pay in order to be able to extend the conversation and message a man, Carmichael just suggests that someone be aware of their values. “I have a lot of [female] clients who prefer more traditional courtships, who it might not align with their values to need to pay to have a longer time to message this man.”

Privacy Matters

If you live in a small town or work in a high-visibility field or something that might cause ethical or sticky situations seeing someone you know on an app—or being seen—you may also want to consider apps that will allow you to have a private profile or to block certain people.

How Much Effort Do You Want to Put In?

Some apps have more detailed profiles to fill out than others. Is it important to you to have a lot of conversation and information about someone before you potentially meet up, or are you the type who matches with someone and wants to quickly nail down a match and get to meeting up in person quickly?

Considering this will help as you think about how to find the best dating app for you.

For Your Approval

While many or most apps allow anyone to sign up, there are some apps that only allow users in after approval. Users create profiles that are then vetted by the staff of the apps.

“For people who are able to join—it’s a real plus,” says Carmichael. “You’re going to know you have something confirmed in common, if someone has vetted you both. You’ve gone through the vetting process and you show that you’re both invested in the process. That starts people off on common ground, which is a great place to start.”

To Niche Or Not to Niche

While there are many larger sites and apps that you may be familiar with, if there’s a niche you can think of, there’s probably a dating site or app for it, such as Dig, a dating app for dog owners.

The advantage to niche sites, says Carmichael, is that “you know you have something in common, just as if you were to meet someone at the gym or at church. It’s nice to have something in common especially if it’s something that connects to your lifestyle and general attitudes."

However, due to the generally smaller user bases of niche apps, she recommends an “all-of-the-above approach” of trying both these bigger and smaller apps.

If you are in a typically marginalized group that is underrepresented on dating apps—or it is important to you to date within your culture—these types of niche apps can help you separate the wheat from the chaff so that you are only seeing the type of people who interest you.

Those in marginalized groups may experience racialized sexual discrimination on apps, which adversely affects their mental health, so niche sites might feel safer for those who prefer to date within their culture or race.

You might also want to think about whether you want to be a big fish in a small pond or have a wider range of matches to choose from. Some people will get overwhelmed by having a huge dating pool while others feel like it increases their odds.

Although dating apps can feel really daunting and overwhelming, Carmichael suggests only spending 10-15 minutes a day—no more, no less—on the apps to “stay on even kilter with it. People often binge-date on dating apps and will spend an hour on the apps every day for a week and then burn out and get frustrated.” Research supports this—more time spent on apps led to worse mental health outcomes.
